Cities have the most to lose from nuclear war. While nations may be destroyed by nuclear war, it is cities that will be destroyed by nuclear weapons. Cities have the most to gain from nuclear disarmament.
Nuclear weapons are dangerous, damaging and expensive. Their continued existence poses an existential threat to humankind and all life on our precious earth. Regardless of what value such weapons may have had in the past, the time has come for complete worldwide nuclear disarmament.
In 1982, an international organization of cities was established by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was called Mayors for Peace.
Mayors for Peace (mayorsforpeace.org) supports the total abolition of nuclear weapons through close collaboration among member cities throughout the world. Mayors for Peace is working for a world without nuclear weapons, for safe and resilient cities, and a culture of peace, as essential measures for the realization of lasting world peace. International coalitions of cities acting out of common purpose can speak with a greatly magnified voice.
