MICH-NDE can provide additional support for your efforts. Here are two suggestions on getting started:
Form a local MICH-NDE steering committee: Elected officials will be more receptive to something that comes from an organized effort rather than an individual. A local steering committee could be important because asking the city to register is only the first step. City officials may register (an easy ask) but may not be more supportive unless you can demonstrate wider support within community.
Generate local support: promotion from civic groups such as Rotarians and Kiwanis, local non-profit groups, churches, schools and for-profit companies as well as from individuals (prominent and otherwise) would demonstrate to city officials that nuclear disarmament efforts have wide appeal within the community.

Your city’s process:
Not all cities work the same way. In some cities, the mayor can (will) make the decision to register as a Mayors For Peace city on his/her own. In other cities, even this type of decision is discussed (formally or informally) by elected city officials before the mayor makes a decision.

You need to know your city’s workings. A simple call or email to city government should get you the information you need.
Alert your elected officials to what you will be asking of them:
It can be useful to request a meeting with the city mayor, your city council representative(s) or several council members to let them know what you will be asking of them. Doing this before you formally request that the city register as a Mayors For Peace city can prepare the city officials as to what will be asked. Elected local officials often have set-aside times for constituents to chat about one thing or another. You can take advantage of that.
Have a script ready:
Whether it is a postal letter, email contact, telephone call or in-person chat, you should have a script ready.

The Registration Process: The registration process is quite straight-forward. The following information should be helpful.

The Registration Process: The registration process is quite straight-forward. The following information should be helpful.
1. Send a “Registration Form” to the Mayors For Peace Secretariat (click the link below for registration form).
2. The Secretariat registers its new member cities once a month (around the 20th).
3. Date of affiliation is the 1st day of the month following the date that the registration procedures are completed by the Secretariat. “Certification of Membership” will be sent out to newly affiliated cities after the date of affiliation.
4. Annual membership fee: In order to facilitate future activities and strengthen the sense of solidarity amongst member cities, Mayors for Peace introduced an annual Membership Fee in 2015. We ask each member city to pay a fee of 2,000 Japanese yen every year. Note: A city will not lose its membership if it is unable or unwilling to pay the membership fee (~$19 per year).
Tell me exactly what you are asking me to do?
No matter how clearly you make your request, you will be asked to repeat what it is you want the mayor to do.
What will it cost our city and how much effort will this entail?
You should explain that you are only asking for your city to register as a Mayors for Peace city. Beyond that, there is no additional effort being asked of city officials or staff. Explain that an annual membership fee of 2000 Japanese yen (about $20) is requested but not a criterion for membership.
What will you ask of us in the future?
Here is where you can explain that we will promote efforts at all levels of government to bring about nuclear disarmament. Having endorsement of our cities for this effort will facilitate our efforts with state and federal officials. This is what we want. Additionally, by becoming a Mayors For Peace city, you will have access to resolutions of Mayors For Peace and be asked for endorsement of these.
